40 Years of Commitment & Innovation - Celebrating Alan Popp

In 2026, Riverina proudly celebrates a remarkable milestone, 40 years of service from Alan Popp, one of the businesses long-standing team members whose journey reflects the heart of Australian agriculture, the evolution of feed manufacturing and the importance of workplace community.

Alan was born in Inglewood and spent his early years in Central Queensland before settling in Warwick at age 13, where he has lived ever since. Agriculture has played a part of his life where his father worked on farms, shaping Alan’s strong work ethic and connection to regional communities.

In 1985, Alan began his career at Riverina as a labourer cleaner, responsible for mill cleaning and general site duties. At the time, he didn’t specifically plan to work in agriculture, but recalls that is was simply a job opportunity he applied for and was fortunate to be accepted into, a moment that unknowingly began a four-decade legacy in feed manufacturing.

Alan is described as a quiet achiever by his colleagues and generally doesn’t like the spotlight on him, rather celebrating his workmates wins together. What has kept Alan committed for so long? He answers with “no day is ever the same”, crediting his longevity to enjoying diverse challenges, problem solving, and continuous learning.

Over the decades, Alan has witnessed a major industry and workplace transformation. From handwritten ledgers and typewriters to forklifts replacing 50kg bags carried by hand. His role has evolved from hands-on mill operations to computer-controlled manufacturing, logistics and adapting to ongoing safety and compliance.

One of his proudest professional achievements was being part of commissioning Riverina’s Wet Mill, supporting the expansion of feed manufacturing and capability for Australian producers.

Off-site, his personal milestones are just as meaningful, a father to three children, grandfather to ten grandkids and eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild. Alan also values traditional ‘old school’ knowledge, using it to mentor his colleagues grow their confidence and skillset.

Over the years, Alan has learned lessons that continue to guide his work;

  • The importance of patience and stress management
  • Sharing knowledge to help others improve skills
  • Staying grounded with practical experience and knowledge know-how

While Alan admits retirement isn’t on the horizon just yet, he is content with where his life has taken him and is proud of the role he has played in both Riverina’s story and Australia’s agricultural supply chain. From all of us at Riverina, past and present we thank you Alan for 40 years of dedication, mentorship and service. Your journey mirrors progress of an entire industry and your contribution and innovation to support farmers and producers across Australia every day.
